Agust D refers to the stage name of BTS Suga's alter ego that he created for his solo projects. To differentiate his work from that of his work as Suga, he developed the alter ego "Agust D," which is derived from the initials DT, short for his birthplace, Daegu Town, and "Suga" spelled backward.

Before launching his career as the Suga of South Korean boy band BTS, Min Yoongi began writing music lyrics and working with MIDI at age 13 and held a part-time job composing and arranging music at a recording studio at age 17. Active under the name "Gloss" as an underground rapper, he originally entered Big Hit Entertainment as a producer in 2010 and trained under Big Hit Entertainment for three years alongside members J-Hope and RM before making his debut as a member of BTS in 2013.

In the initial years of his career in BTS, both he and his fellow group member RM faced criticism from the South Korean underground hip hop scene for "selling out" and becoming K-pop idols. All these emotions become the subjects of the music he makes under the name "Agust D."

Agust D released his latest mixtape titled "D-2" on May 22, 2020. Almost instantly, it was a great hit. Despite discrepancies and misled controversy regarding a production mistake, D-2 continued to chart high. The album's peak at 11 on the Billboard 200, at seven on the Official UK Chart, and 2 on the ARIA chart, setting three new records for the highest-ranking album in the US, UK, and Australia by a Korean solo artist.
