SM Entertainment announced the fandom name for Aespa to be "MY." The word "MY" translates to "the most precious friend" in the wilderness of Kwangya, where Aespa's virtual characters live. They chose to go with "MY," as the fans are what is most precious to Aespa, and they consider the fans are previous friends.

Despite the touching meaning of the name, Korean netizens are not thrilled with it. Many think it is absurd that SM Entertainment announced a fandom name when the group hasn't even debuted yet and claims the company might be overestimating how popular the group will be.

Aespa has been in the center of controversy ever since they were announced. Just recently, SM Entertainment was accused of plagiarizing other artists for Aespa's member teasers and "Black Mamba" teaser. Netizens continue to slam SM Entertainment to put out low-quality teasers for the group and not give artists their due credit.

Netizens have targeted the members themselves. When Aespa was first announced, people demanded Karina (also known as Yoo Jimin) not be included in the group's line-up after alleged text messages between her and a friend were leaked and showed her insulting her senior artists, such as NCT, EXO, and BTS.

Friends of Karina have since come out and defended Karina from malicious rumors, claiming the text messages were fabricated.

People also demanded Ningning not be added to the group due to her being Chinese. Currently, tensions between China and South Korea are at an all-time high, with South Koreans even filing a national petition to ban certain Chinese idols from actively promoting in the country.
