NiziU to Perform at Japan's Popular Year-End Music Show 'Kōhaku' Following Debut

NiziU, JYP Entertainment's first official J-Pop girl group, will make its debut performance at Kōhaku Uta Gassen.

Kōhaku Uta Gassen, known as Kōhaku, is an annual New Year's Eve event organized by Japan's national broadcaster NHK. The show is aired on television and radio, both nationally and globally. The program consists of the most famous music artists of the year, divided into two competing groups, the white and red. The white team is composed of all male singers, while the red team is all female. At the end of the show, the winner (the artist who performed best) is announced.

On Nov. 16, NHK announced the lineup of the artists attending this year's Kōhaku Uta Gassen, which will take place on Dec. 31. NiziU is one of the girl groups who will appear for the first time on the annual show and Babymetal.NiziU's appearance at the New Year's Eve event sets a new record for the fastest rookie group to be included on Kōhaku, just 29 days after its debut. They broke the previous Japanese duo WaT, who performed at the Kōhaku after one month and 29 days.

One of the members of NiziU shared that upon hearing the news that they were invited to perform at the year-end music show, she was so thrilled that she burst into tears. "I am so happy to end 2020 at the 'Red and White' program. Appearing at the event is one of the goals I want to achieve since I was preparing to be a singer," the member said.

This year's Kōhaku will be conducted without an audience for the very first time because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The returning artists include LiSA, the one who sang the theme music for numerous anime such as Demon Slayer, Sword Art Online, and Fate/Zero. All-male pop band Arashi will also be attending the said event.

Prior to the group's appearance at Japan's year-end music show, NiziU will be returning to TV Asahi's Music Station. This famous music program has been in business for 34 years in Japan. The girls will greet the viewers on Nov. 27, just a few days before their official debut.

NiziU is a nine-member girl group formed by JYP Entertainment through the survival reality show called "Nizi Project." Members include Mako, Rio, Maya, Riku, Ayaka, Miihi, Nina, Mayuka, and Rima. The band is in alliance with record company Sony Music for group management and album sales during its promotions and activities in Japan.

NiziU launched its digital extended play titled "Make You Happy" as a pre-release track in June of this year, both in South Korea and Japan. This past July, it was revealed globally. The music video for the song was uploaded through JYP Entertainment's official YouTube channel. As of Nov. 17, KST, the MV has reached more than 165 million views.

It was previously reported that NiziU became the very first female Japanese group to exceed 100 million streams on the Oricon chart with "Make You Happy." Meanwhile, the band's debut album "Step and Step" will be out on Dec. 2.
