On July 9, 2021, BTS released their third English-language single, "Permission to Dance." The dance-pop song is described as a track that will make your heart bounce to the rhythm of BTS's positive energy.

Prior to the release of "Permission to Dance," Ed Sheeran revealed on "Most Requested Live" that he wrote a song for BTS. This proved to be true after HYBE Labels revealed the tracklist for the CD release of "Butter," where they named "Permission to Dance" as the song's title. Ed Sheeran wrote the song alongside Johnny McDaid, Steve Mac, and Jenna Andrews.

"Permission to Dance" ranked at the top of Japan's Oricon Digital Singles. In addition, on Billboard Japan's Hot 100, "Permission to Dance" ranked at number two.

On May 21, BTS dropped their second English-language single, "Butter." The music video for the said song broke the record for the biggest YouTube premiere of all time, amassing 3.9 million peak concurrent viewers. "Butter" also broke the record for the most-viewed YouTube video within the first 23 hours, garnering 108.2 million views.

"Butter" debuted at the top of the US Billboard Hot 100, making it BTS's fourth number-one hit in the United States. They are the quickest act to achieve this, doing so in four months, breaking Justin Timberlake's decade-and-a-half ago record. They are also the fastest group to do so since The Jackson 5 in 1970.

On June 28, "Butter" became the longest-running #1 debut in Hot 100 history, breaking Aerosmith's 23-year record with "I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing."
