BTS, BLACKPINK, and TWICE Among Nominees of MTV VMAs 2021

K-Pop continues its crossover success in the Western world as MTV nominates multiple Korean acts at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), namely BTS, BLACKPINK, TWICE, and more!

BTS Receives VMA Nominations for 'Dynamite' and 'Butter'

The gargantuan BTS phenomenon manifests itself in early awards season as the male idol group received five nominations at the VMAs.

"Dynamite," the band's first English-language hit, is up for contention for Song of the Year, alongside Olivia Rodrigo's breakthrough hit "drivers license," and Bruno Mars and Silk Sonic's 70s-inspired tune "Leave the Door Open," among other songs.

"Butter" takes up their remaining four nominations: Best Pop Video, Best Choreography, Best Editing, and Best-Kpop. The latter marks their third consecutive nomination for this category, having won the award previously with "Boy with Luv (feat. Halsey)" and "On."

Son Sung-Deuk, a longtime collaborator of BTS, was the primary choreographer of the "Butter" music video.

The idol group is no stranger to the VMAs. In last year's edition, they performed "Dynamite" for the first time and won all four of their nomination.

BLACKPINK, TWICE among the Best K-Pop Video Nominees

In 2019, MTV first introduced the Best K-Pop Video award in the wake of the genre's burgeoning popularity in the cable TV platform.

This 2021 marked some notable milestones for the nominees.

For one, four of the six nominated acts are girl groups. BLACKPINK and (G)I-DLE earn their second nod in this category, the former with their Selena Gomez collaboration, "Ice Cream," and the latter with their summer hit, "Dumdi Dumdi."

The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) is an award show inaugurated in the mid-1980s that rewards achievements in the art of music videos.

Artists like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Eminem, and Lady Gaga are among the most notable acts recognized by the awarding body.

The ceremony is also a mainstream phenomenon in itself. Each year, audiences witness some of the most iconic musical performances and most divisive incidences on TV.

They include Britney Spears' sultry "I'm A Slave 4 U" performance, Miley Cyrus's raunchy duet with Robin Thicke, and Kanye West's interruption of Taylor Swift's speech, to name a few.

For the second time, the Barclays Center in Brooklyn will be hosting the ceremony on September 12. This year will mark the introduction of a redesigned version of the Moonman statue, courtesy of NYC-based artist Kehinde Wiley, in commemoration of MTV's 40th anniversary of its first broadcast.

Viewers and fans can vote for the winners online via the MTV website, where they are allowed to vote up to 20 times a day.
