Jodi Arias Lawyers Say New Trial Would Waste Taxpayers Money; Defense Laywers Call It a `Canny Strategy'

Jodi Arias’ lawyers are taking it to the streets. The Jodi Arias trial has gone on too long and has cost too much, they say. Jodi Arias lawyers are saying that a new trial to determine the fate of the convicted killer, Jodi Arias, will be a waste of taxpayers’ money as prosecutors decide whether to continue to pursue the death penalty for the Jodi Arias, the young woman found guilty in the death of her ex-boyfriend, Travis Alexander.

Jodi Arias’ attorneys have tried all the tricks available to them in the courtroom to give their client, Jodi Arias, the best defense against the charges and the penalty for the death of Travis Alexander. The Jodi Arias defense team has tried motions for mistrials; they have made allegations of prosecutorial misconduct; they have made appeals to higher courts to stop the death penalty phase. Jodi Arias lawyers have even tried to quit the case. The lawyers have lost in the courtroom every time, but now they are taking their case to the court of public opinion

In an exclusive statement to The Arizona Republic, Jodi Arias defense attorneys Kirk Nurmi and Jennifer Willmott wrote "It is solely for them to determine if continuing to pursue a death sentence upon Ms. Arias, who is already facing a mandatory life sentence, is a good and proper use of taxpayer resources."

A spokesman for the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, Jerry Cobb, has not made any comment on the Jodi Arias’ lawyers' statement. He said no decision had yet been made on how to proceed. Michael Cardoza, a San Francisco-area criminal defense lawyer said the statement made to Arizona’s largest newspaper was a strategic move. Cardoza said "They're definitely doing the right thing by pandering to the public and calling a new trial a waste of resources. They're hoping someone will lean on the prosecutor's office. And unfortunately today, many DA's are very much affected by public opinion."

On May 8, Arias was convicted of first-degree murder in the June 2007 stabbing and shooting death of her ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander in his suburban Phoenix, Ariz., home. The same jury couldn’t reach a unamimous decision on whether to sentence the Arias to death or life in prison. If sentenced to life in prison, Arias could be released after 25 years.
