Joss Whedon Wants More Female Superheroes; Buffy creator is `Pissed Off’ that Women Get the Short End

Joss Whedon wants to see more female superheroes in films. Joss Whedon says he always includes strong women in his projects and is angry that other filmmakers overlook powerful women.

Joss Whedon created “Buffy The Vampire Slayer,” the popular supernatural TV series that starred Sarah Michelle Gellar as an alternative to the usual frightened female found in horror films, the kind who trip on the high-heeled shoes and spend most of their time on-screen screaming. The TV and film director, writer and producer told The Daily Beast that he was "raised by a hard-core feminist," and as a result, got picked on lot as a child. Whedon said that he could relate to "the feeling of helplessness." Whedon was discovered by Roseanne Barr who hired him as a writer on her ground-breaking TV sitcom “Roseanne.”

Whedon says the entertainment industry is wrong by assuming that women can't sell action films. He points to his long-running action series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” which spawned a film, television series and a comic book series that is still attracting followers. Whedon points out that the Buffy character has a huge cult following that is still growing. He is angry that marketing executives haven’t noticed.

Whedon says "Toymakers will tell you they won't sell enough, and movie people will point to the two terrible superheroine movies that were made and say, 'You see? It can't be done. It's stupid, and I'm hoping The Hunger Games will lead to a paradigm shift. It's frustrating to me that I don't see anybody developing one of these movies. It actually pisses me off. My daughter watched The Avengers and was like, 'My favorite characters were the Black Widow and Maria Hill,' and I thought, 'Yeah, of course they were.' I read a beautiful thing Junot Diaz wrote: 'If you want to make a human being into a monster, deny them, at the cultural level, any reflection of themselves.'"

Whedon also wondered by there hasn’t been a big screen version of Wonder Women ato counter all the Batman and Superman movies we’ve seen for decades.
