Is Disney Building Star Wars Land To Compete With Universal Orlando’s Wizarding World Of Harry Potter?

Disney is being pummeled by Universal Orlando's constant expansion efforts, from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter to Transformers: The Ride. It looks like Disney is ready to strike back, with the announcement by various sources that Star Wars Land is coming to Walt Disney World's Hollywood Studios by 2018.

According to The International Business Times, Star Wars Land at Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World, which is located in Orlando, Florida, will include a restaurant modeled after the bar scene in "A New Hope." It will be officially known as Chalmun's Cantina in Mos Eisley, the spaceport on Luke Skywalker's home planet of Tatooine.

The current Star Tours attraction will also get an upgrade, as well as new levels, interactive additions, and maybe even a new ride.

After redesigning the California Adventure theme park, Disney made $1 billion and attendance surged 23% last year, Theme Park Insider reports. Perhaps to compete with Universal Orlando's constant expansion, the president of the Disneyland Resort, George Kalogridis, was sent to Florida and now oversees the Walt Disney World Resort there.

Looks like Disney is hoping for similar success in Orlando. They are even building another Cars Land, the reason behind the success of the California Adventure theme park makeover.

Sources say they believe Star Wars Land will be a five-year project, and will most likely be complete by 2018.

According to IGN, Disney is planning to release a new Star Wars movie every year beginning in 2015 with Episode VII. This means that whether or not Star Wars Land opens to the public in 2018, there would be another Star Wars film to promote meanwhile with the amusement park.
