Review: Lee Hyori Mans Up For The 'Going Crazy' Music Video, But Can She Top The Brilliance Of 'Bad Girls'? [VIDEO]

All great artists have this problem: when you continue to deliver amazing work, you start to set the bar impossibly high for yourself.

When Lee Hyori released "Miss Korea," the debut music video off of her fifth album "Monochrome," last month, it was a jaw-droppingly unique sound and look that managed to be both classy and dancey at the same time.

It was unreasonable to expect Lee to deliver a video for another song from the same album with the same kind of boundary-pushing sound and look.

Then a few weeks later she dropped "Bad Girls," and somehow produced a video that is perhaps more visually innovative that "Miss Korea" and undeniably more fun.

It would be difficult to find a more rewarding pair of videos released this year by any artist, let alone within the world of K-pop.

But the drawback to this incredible 2013 streak is we are now expecting Lee Hyori to blow our minds every time she releases a new track.

This isn't reasonable. Even the King of Pop himself couldn't live up to that kind of expectation.

It's not surprising Lee announced a sudden retreat from the spotlight recently.

Fortunately for the Queen of K-pop, Lee Hyori on a bad day is still better than practically anyone out there, so it's not that "Going Crazy" featuring narration from comedian Ahn Young Mi is a total loss.

In fact both the song, which dials in middle-period Britney Spears, and the accompanying video would be newsworthy if they were from almost any another artist.

But we are used to the thrill-a-minute from Lee Hyori.

And that's just it: in "Miss Korea" or "Bad Girls" every beat reveals a new joke, a new set, something eye catching or amusing to look at.

In "Going Crazy" director Cha Eun Taek basically executes one joke--Lee dressed up like a man in a suit with a penciled on mustache--and little else.

The song has a similar problem musically. There is one main musical idea with a vocal that changes at the chorus.

"Going Crazy" lacks the amazing hooks or harmonically inventive bridges of "Miss Korea" or "Bad Girls"

That's not to say Lee has used up all of the grade-A material off of "Monochrome."

The song "Special" for example, is as good as anything she has ever recorded.

A quality video for that track would help write another chapter in what is shaping up to be a pretty amazing year for Lee Hyori.
