Pharrell Williams Sues Will.i.am For Trying To Block The ‘Blurred Lines’ Singers’ Youtube Channel ‘I Am Other,’ Quotes Dr. Seuss

Pharrell Williams launched a Youtube channel called "I Am OTHER," but reports say Will.i.am is trying to block him from using the name. In response, Pharrell is suing Will.i.am and wants a New York court to rule that his "I am OTHER" company is not infringing on Will.i.am's "I AM" trademark.

Black Eyed Peas rapper Will.i.am sent Williams cease and desist letters in March and May to stop him from using the phrase for his website and Youtube channel, according to a complaint filed Monday in New York, The Los Angeles Times reports.

Lawyers for Will.i.am said in the original letter, sent last year, that "the use of the term "I AM" is likely to cause visitors to the website to believe" that Will.i.am is affiliated with the site. Williams' "I Am Other" is too similar to his own "I AM" brand, Will.i.am argues.

Will.i.am uses the term "I Am" in various enterprises including entertainment, consumer electronic products and philanthropy, International Business Times reports.

In retaliation, musician and producer Williams is suing Will.i.am, TMZ reports. Williams' complaint argues that Will.i.am has a "relatively weak" trademark claim in this case, according to The Los Angeles Times.

Williams has taken to quoting Dr. Seuss' "Green Eggs and Ham" to prove his point, saying that Will.i.am is using "I am" in a playful take on his own name, similar to the story: "Sam I am/ I am Sam/ I am Sam/ Sam I am."

Pharrell says: "In contrast, the I Am OTHER mark means 'I am something else,' leaving what that 'else' is to the imagination of the consumer. It certainly does not mean 'I am Will.'"

Pharrell is asking a judge for permission to continue using the "I Am OTHER" mark, TMZ reports.

Williams had two massive summer hits this year, including lending vocals to Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" and Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines."
