Jodi Arias Trial Heats Up as Phone Sex Hearings Are Unsealed; Alexander Presented as Virginal, but Was She Sexually Abused?

Jodi Arias trial got hot today as the hearing on the Jodi Arias phone sex conversations were unsealed. The prosecution and defense battled heatedly during the Jodi Arias sex take hearing and captured media attention at the start of the trial. Many details of the Jodi Arias sex talk were kept private, but now with the hearings unsealed, they have become public. Forget “50 Shades of Grey,” the Jodi Arias sex tape should become a meme.

Jodi Arias was convicted of brutally murdering her boyfriend, the 30-year-old Travis Alexander, in June 2008. Medical examiners said Jodi Arias stabbed Travis Alexander almost 30 times, shot him in the face slit his throat so violently that she almost took his head off. The 32 year old waitress and budding photographer was found to have done all this in under two minutes. Arias initially denied committing such atrocious acts, but later admitted that she acted in self-defense.

The jurors were not convinced. They rejected the self-defense claims and said she was guilty, but they were not able to agree on a punishment. Anyone who committed such an act must surely have undergone extreme trauma at some point in their life. The jury couldn’t bring themselves to impose the death penalty on the attractive killer. The Judge dismissed the jurors and set the next court date for July 16.

The Arizona Republic got a transcript in June of the January 31 hearing that dealt with the phone sex recording evidence. State’s attorney Juan Martinez tried to get the recording banned as evidence. He argued that the conversation amounted to hearsay because it was impossible to verify that it was Jodi Arias’ voice on the recording.

In closed chambers, Martinez argued that "what I'm trying to avoid is having to squawk up like a Jack-in-the-box every five minutes [with objections]. And rather than making a big fight out there, I guess, I'm wanting to make the big fight here."

The phone sex tape that the court heard was recorded a month before the brutal slaying, in May 2008. Arias was heard giggling on the tape as Alexander told her about his sexual fantasies. The tape shows Alexander saying "I'm going to tie you to a tree and put it in your ass." And a female voice, which defense claimed was Jodi Arias, saying "Oh my gosh, that is so debasing, I like it." The tape painted Alexander as an abusive sadist with a "nearly predatory sex drive." Juan Martinez said there was no way to prove that Alexander had ever acted out his fantasies.

Jennifer Willmott, one of Jodi Arias’ lawyers, told the judge that the recording was important to the defense because it undercut the claims that Alexander was an innocent, pious virgin. Kirk Nurmi, Arias’ other attorney said the tape showed "the abusive and exploitative relationship which is entirely relevant to not only her self-defense, but also anything that can give rise to sudden heat of passion." The jury was not moved. Nurmi said "Again at a time when she is supposedly this crazy stalker person that he doesn't want around, he's having phone sex with her and talking about the things that he wishes to do." Martinez countered that "He's not the aggressor, she is."

Jodi Arias is set to appear in court again on July 16.
