Actor Song Joong Ki will be enlisting in the South Korean military on August 27, according to the publication eNEWS.

Best known for his appearances on the Seoul Broadcasting System TV variety show "Running Man" and his role on the historical drama "Sungkyunkwan Scandal," Song will reportedly receive basic training in Chuncheon, the capital city in South Korea's Gangwon Province.

The actor said he will complete all of his professional obligations before joining up at the end of the month, and would return to his dramatic career once his enlistment is through.

"I will finish off the rest of my activities in the mean time before enlisting. I send my wholehearted thanks to all the people who have supported and loved me and I'm apologetic that I cannot thank you all individually," Song said in official statement.

"I'll complete my services for the next two years and return well. After I come back, I'll greet you all with great projects, so until then, stay healthy!"

The actor, who will hold a fan meeting 10 days before his scheduled enlistment, will be the first celebrity to join the army following the PR agent scandal that rocked the Ministry of Defense and led to the elimination of the Army's Promotional Support Brigade.

The problems for the National Ministry of Defense began when a camera crew from the news program "Scene 21" caught members of the promotional support brigade wandering the streets after curfew out of uniform, chatting on their cellphones and purchasing alcohol at 2 a.m.

K-pop singers Sangchu of the group Mighty Mouth and Se7en were filmed visiting a massage known for providing erotic services. The pair was sentenced to 10-days in military jail last week, for their illegal actions.

Five other active recruits previously serving as PR agents were sentenced to a four-day incarceration at the military prison or "guardhouse" for using cellphones in the "Scene 21" footage, according to the Korea Star Daily.

All eligible males between the ages of 18 and 35 currently must enroll for between 21 and 24 months of army service in South Korea (the length of mandatory enrollment changes by several months depending on which branch of the military that they serve in) in a practice known as conscription.

Celebrity soldiers previously assigned to the Promotional Support Brigade, a known bastion for famous soldiers since its creation in 1997, will no longer receive special perks, a Ministry of Defense spokesperson said on Tuesday.

"It hasn't been decided yet on what posts [former PR agents from the Promotional Support Brigade] will be assigned to or what units they'll be sent to, but what is certain is that there will be no preferential treatment," the spokesperson said.
