Psy Says YG Entertainment's New Reality Show 'WIN: Who Is Next' Is 'Tailored For The 21st Century'

Several of YG Entertainment's biggest artists including Psy and G-Dragon of the group Big Bang responded with a mixture of surprise an intrigue after learning about the format of  "WIN: Who Is Next," the new reality show created by the record label's founder and CEO Yang Hyun Suk.

The show, which premieres on South Korean networks Mnet and tvN on Friday, will feature two different teams of aspiring male K-pop artists facing off to win votes from viewers, as they compete for the chance to be in a YG Entertainment boy band.

"I think 'WIN' is a survival program tailored for 21st century," Psy said, according to a YG Entertainment press release.

"It's extremely harsh and cold, but I think it'll be very interesting."

G-Dragon described the show as "a real battlefield."

The Big Bang rapper's song Let's Shake The World" will be used for the opening credits of "WIN: Who Is Next?" 'WIN: Who Is Next'

Music producers Park Jin Young and Yoon Jong Shin released a joint statement praising YG Entertainment's new endeavor.

"Creating a program like this simply shows that YG is confident with what they've got," the statement read. "That is YG power."

Earlier this week, YG Entertainment released details about the two competing teams on "WIN: Who Is Next."

Team A features five members including YG rookie solo artist Kang Seung Yoon, and Lee Seung Hoon of the reality show "K-Pop Star."

With one more member but distinctly less star power, Team B's six members include the 17-year-old rapper B.I., best known for his guest appearance on MC Mong track "Indian Boy" in 2009.

"We chose the 11 members out of 30 to 40 trainees," Yang explained at a media event on Yeoui Island in Seoul on Tuesday.

"So we divided the 11 into two groups. This is the first boy group in 8 years, but realistically it seems impossible for the losing team to make a debut next year or the following year."

The record label mogul also outlined the stakes of the game.

"The winning team will make a debut under the group name WINNER, and the losing one will face a break-up or have to wait indefinitely until they can become professional artists," Yang said.

The CEO claims he will look to the show's winners to bring YG Entertainment into the next decade.

"YG has changed a lot since Big Bang's debut eight years ago," Yang said. "The new group will carry the responsibility of YG for the next eight years."
