Warner Brothers confirmed to ABC News that the Oscar-winning actor Ben Affleck will be the next next Dark Knight. Fans of the Superman franchise and citizens, fear not, this is no “Daredevil,” Ben Affleck hasn’t been seen with Jennifer Lopez for years.

Ben Affleck won last year’s Academy Award for Best Picture, for producing the heroic tale “Argo,” which he also directed and starred in. Ben Affleck to play Batman in the next as-yet-untitled installment of the Superman franchise which teams Ben Affleck’s caped crusader with Henry Cavill, who will be reprising his Superman role.

Ben Affleck will leave stately Wayne Manor in the “Man of Steel” sequel that will be directed by Zack Snyder. Jack Snyder directed the first "Man of Steel,"as well as the films "Watchmen" and "Sucker Punch."

In a statement, Jack Snyder said, "Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry's Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can't wait to work with him."

This will be the first time on film that Batman will join forces with Superman. It is also the first time Ben Affleck, who rose to stardom with Matt Damon in their film, “Good Will Hunting,” will work with British actor Henry Cavill, 31.

The announcement that Ben Affleck to play Batman follows weeks of speculation about who would play the caped crusader in the surefire box office hit. Christian Bale starred in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy but balked at putting on the cape. Rumors circulated that Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper and Michael Fassbender would save Gotham City, or will it be Metropolis?

In a statement, Greg Silverman, president of creative development at Warner Bros. Pictures said "We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics' most enduringly popular super heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some. His outstanding career is a testament to his talent and we know he and Zack will bring new dimension to the duality of this character."

Ben Affleck played the actor George Reeves, who is the first iconic Superman from TV in the September 2006 movie Hollywoodland, directed by Allen Coulter and written by Paul Bernbaum.

"Man of Steel" made more than $289 million in the United States and pulled in another $650 million worldwide.
