Los Angeles Gears Up For This Weekend's KCON 2013: G-Dragon, f(x), 2AM, Missy Elliott Scheduled To Perform

K-pop fans from far and wide will be in Los Angeles this weekend for the second annual KCON.

What started last year as a one-day event bringing together performances and panel discussions at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Irvine, Calif., has morphed into a multimedia spectacle featuring A-list performers and seminars on everything from Korean cooking to Asian Americans in hip-hop.

And with 10,000 attendees at last year's event, and a bill that includes K-pop giants G-Dragon, f(x), and 2AM, KCON 2013 promises to be a major happening.

Iconic American hip-hop singer, rapper and producer Missy Elliott will also perform at KCON, which will be held at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena this year.

"KCON represents a link of communication to fans, which is the most important thing for me," Jo Kwon of 2AM told the Wall Street Journal on Friday.

Jo, whose band performs on Sunday, feels that more events like KCON are necessary to bridge the cultural divide between K-pop artists and American fans.

"There are many obstacles to cross over in America. There is conflict between the two cultures in terms of sharing common ground and musical aspects," the 2AM singer said.

"K-pop has gone global but more effort is needed to exchange music."

Ted Kim is the president and CEO of MNet America, the K-pop cable network that organized and sponsored KCON.

For him one of the best aspects of last year's event was the diversity of the crowd.

"When we threw the gates open last year, one of the most inspiring things was seeing the diversity of the audience," Kim told the Los Angeles Times on Thursday.

"There was every ethnicity, and I'd say Koreans were probably not the majority."

According to Kim, the two-day festival is also a recruiting zone for potential future stars.

"K-pop bands are built differently than ones from America," he said.

"There's a lot of questions about it. 'how do you get discovered and become G-Dragon? Why am I hooked on this music in a language I don't speak, from a place that isn't here?' But we want people to come away from this saying 'I want to do that!'"

Tickets for KCON 2013 range from $60 to $300 and can be acquired at the website Kconusa.com. The event takes place at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena at 3939 S. Figueroa Street in Los Angeles, Calif. on August 24 and 25.
