Director Bong Joon Ho Denies Weinstein Company Forced Severe Edits On 'Snowpiercer' For U.S. Release

Bong Joon Ho shot down online reports earlier this month that Harvey Weinstein forced the 'Snowpiercer' director to heavily his record breaking new film before his company would distribute it internationally, at a press event in France on Tuesday.

The director is currently in the process of editing "Snowpiercer" an action-thriller about a group of people advancing to the front of a train, which sold 4 million tickets faster than any South Korean film in history, for US release.

"I came here after [working on] editing for the American version," Bong said, according to eNEWS.

"I've never produced a new version for overseas premieres, and this is the first time I′m making a new version."

The director denied reports that after signing a distribution deal with Weinstein Company, he had been forced to heavily edit his film.

"Weinstein is actually being pretty soft toward editing, probably because it's noticed how critics have praised the film and know how angry movie fans get over new edits," Bong said.

"They even asked me which parts I want to include in the film," he said.

On August 5, Twitchfilm.com's Pierce Conran reported that Harvey "Scissorhands" Weinstein as he is known by some critics, insisted 20 minutes of the film be cut before it could be released in North America, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and England.

"It has now been revealed that Harvey Weinstein has ordered the revered Korean cineaste to cut a whopping 20 minutes from his film before it will see the light of day," Conran wrote.

Film critic Tony Rayns, who attended the "Snowpiercer" premiere in Seoul and claims he spoke to Bong about the alleged cuts on July 27, told Twitch that it all had to do with how the film will be perceived in the Midwest.

"The Weinstein Company people have told Bong that their aim is to make sure the film 'will be understood by audiences in Iowa... and Oklahoma.'"

"Leaving aside the issue of what Weinstein thinks of its audience, it seems to say the least anomalous that the rest of the English-speaking world has to be dragged down to the presumed level of American mid-west hicks," Rayns added.

Bong has cut distribution deals for "Snowpiercer" to be released in 167 countries. It recently surpassed eight million tickets sold.
