Gia Coppola Movie Direction Debut Follows Family Footsteps; Based on James Franco’s Short Stories

Gia Coppola, granddaughter of “The Godfather” director, Francis Ford Coppola, and niece of Sofia Coppola, who directed “The Virgin Suicides,” is stepping into the family business.

Gia Coppola’s movie debut may set her apart from her filmmaking family. Roman Coppola also directed his first movie, “CQ” in 2001. It has not been released. He also directed “A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III” with Charlie Sheen in 2012. Roman Coppola also directed music videos for Green Day and Moby.

The new Gia Coppola movie, “Palo Alto,” was based short stories that were written by the actor James Franco. Gia Coppola brought together a group of young actors like Emma Roberts, Keegan Allen from “Pretty Little Liars” and Jack Kilmer.

Gia Coppola’s movie “Palo Alto” premiered in August at the Telluride Film Festival. There is no official release date yet.

Gia Coppola didn’t go to her famous family for help on her first movie. Gia Coppola recently told The Canadian Press, “It was important for me to find my own voice and try to do it on my own.”

“Palo Alto” tells the story of a group of teenagers in Palo Alto, California, who excel at getting in trouble. James Franco said "I guess I was a little like that, I was into art, I got into a bit of trouble, and yeah, that's me."

Emma Roberts plays a student who getting hit on by her soccer coach, played by James Franco. Val Kilmer plays her stepfather. Gia Coppola says that explains "why she would get entangled with her soccer coach and I think if there was something missing with her life at home."
