Lim Jung Hee, "I Want To Be An Artist, Not A Trendsetter"

Lim Jung Hee's vocal spectrum is unlike any other. It can be both a whisper that brings tears and a powerful vocal explosion. Just like her wide vocal spectrum, her musical spectrum is just as broad, and although it isn't necessarily trendy, it portrays her vocal style over various genres.

Lim Jung Hee released her new single "Love Is" on August 8th. It is sung over acoustic guitar and a bass line with her unique vocals. It entered the charts as soon as the song was released. It was like she never took a break when, in fact, she had been away from the pop charts for 2 years.

"I loved the song but didn't like the fact that it was just a single, so I made another version with a hip-hop flavor. It's not a gut-wrenching ballad like "I Couldn't Cry" but I think it carries my personal style very well. The hip-hop version features Baechigi's rap, which gives it a different feel than the original song. 2AM's Seulong made an appearance in the music video. Many people helped me."

Lim Jung Hee is now among the oldest artists in the waiting room of music programs which prominently feature idol groups. She's happy to be greeted with respect from the artists that will follow in her footsteps. She says there are some groups that she's really taken to like, such as EXO, ZE:A, and BTS.

"At first there were so many idol groups that I couldn't remember them all. But now I recognize a lot of them - except they're now done with their album performances. Most idols are so skilled these days. I saw EXO's Baekhyun sing the Korean national anthem without any background tracks or monitors, and he blew me away."

With Lim Jung Hee's comeback, the music scene has shifted to feature predominantly female artists, including Tasha (Yoon Mirae) and Sistar's Hyorin who sang the OST to SBS's "The Master's Sun" and Baek Ji Young who sang the OST to KBS's "Good Doctor."

"It's good competition, and at the same time they are a good deal of encouragement to me. They are so good that they make me think that I really need to get better. Competition never pushes me to not be myself, and I think that's the reason that I am able to perform for a long time."

Lim Jung Hee also sang for an OST album last year as well. Even when fans wondered about her whereabouts, she didn't remain idle. She was cast in musical "Rock of Ages" and "The Wolf's Temptation."

"Musicals involve acting, dancing, and singing, which are very difficult, but I also had to learn to perform with other people. I was sometimes very lonely when I performed alone on stage, but performing in a musical really made me realize how great it is to have partners on stage. I love being in musicals and look forward to more musical performances."

Lim Jung Hee has been active on TV programs, concerts, and radio and she plans to remain active until at least the end of the year.

"I wondered what I did while I was away from my fans, too. I initially felt like I didn't do much, but I realized that I did remain pretty active with the musicals, the features that I did for other artists, and even singing in the OST album. It just felt like I didn't do much because I didn't release a song - but I realize that it made me feel distant from my fans. That's why I decided to continue performing for at least until the end of the year. I want to do my fans right."
