AfroDuck Driver Breaks Driving Record for Lap Around Manhattan (Video)

AfroDuck driver broke a record for doing a lap around Manhattan in just over 24 minutes. It looked like a scene from the movie “Fast & Furious,” but a New York City driver who went under the nickname AfroDuck Production showed off an exciting video of a drive that set a record for taking a lap around Manhattan.

The AfroDuck driver put the video up on YouTube that caught every exciting turn down the FDR and up the West Side Highway. The AfroDuck trip clocks in at just over 24 minutes. AfroDuck Production was driving a 2006 BMW Z4. The video caught the superfast car, BMWs can do about 155 MPS, weaving in and out of traffic on the route. The AfroDuck Production video breaks two previous records for making the loop. AfroDuck Production says he "can do it consistently." It looks like the AfroDuck driver will probably make another attempt.

The AfroDuck Production clip went up on YouTube two days after the driver reportedly made the loop.

AfroDuck Production released footage from the loop on August 26, 2013. It appears to show the fastest lap around Manhattan by car.

AfroDuck Production started the 26.5-mile lap at 116th Street and FDR Drive. The speed racer then took the Battery Park Underpass and crossed to the West Side Highway. After cutting east along I-95, AfroDuck headed south to hit the finish line on the FDR.

AfroDuck exceeded speed limits but hit a few red lights.

AfroDuck was driving a stock 2006 BMW Z4, which can do 155 miles per hour.

The speed demon finished the lap in 24 minutes and 7 seconds. That would make for an average speed of about 66 miles per hour. The FDR has a maximum 45 mph speed limit.

AfroDuck told Jalopnik, "Being a good driver, you're more aware of what is around you. Being a fast driver doesn't mean that you're inherently a bad or reckless driver."

AfroDuck hit at six red lights on the run.

This may be a record, but that means there was a record to break, which means this isn’t the first time the stunt has been tried. Driver Alex Roy set the first known record in 2001 when he did a lap around Manhattan in 27 minutes. In 2010 a group known as CBC beat Alex Roy by almost a minute when they did the lap in 26 minutes and 3 seconds.

AfroDuck Production’s video doesn’t show anything that might identify the driver, but that doesn’t mean he won’t get busted.

AfroDuck said "This wasn't the first time I broke the record. I can do it consistently under 24 minutes and most likely beat my own record again."
