Jodi Arias Trial Attorneys Request Ban on Live Stream Broadcast Ban and Venue Change; Ask That Jodi Arias Jury Twitter Accounts Monitored

Jodi Arias trial update: Jodi Arias attorneys are asking that that sentencing phase of the trial be moved out of the Phoenix area due to excessive publicity. Jodi Arias' lawyers filed a motion for a change of venue because they found that 70 percent of the media coverage in the state started in Maricopa County. Lawyers also want Jodi Arias trial live stream television coverage prohibited for the retrial.

Jodi Arias was convicted of the grisly murder of her ex-boyfriend, Travis Alexander. The former waitress and budding photographer stabbed him 27 times, shot him in the face and cut his throat from ear to ear with such force she almost took his head off. Jodi Arias said she did it in self-defense. She claimed Travis Alexander had a violent outburst while they were shooting a nude video and she dropped his camera. The jury found her guilty but couldn't decide whether to sentence her to life in prison or give her the death penalty.

In the motion, Jodi Arias' attorney Kirk Nurmi said "Both the nature and extent of the publicity surrounding Ms. Arias' case render it impossible that the accused will receive a fair trial in this capital case if it is tried in Maricopa County."

The Jodi Arias trial lawyer said the case has received "widespread, unfair and prejudicial coverage" from media outlets in Maricopa County.

The judge overseeing the Jodi Arias trial postponed setting a date for the new sentencing phase because it would allow prosecutors to have more time to respond to Jodi Arias' defense team to get jurors' Twitter usernames and to limit Jodi Arias trial live stream TV coverage on Monday.

Judges routinely admonish jurors about talking about a case during the trial. Jurors are also supposed to avoid media coverage and are supposed to limit their social media exchanges while a is being heard.

Jodi Arias' lawyers wrote that the admonition alone, without the ability to monitor jurors' Twitter activity, could affect whether Jodi Arias gets a fair trial under the rights of the Sixth Amendment.
