"The Master's Sun" is a national hit that has achieved over 17% viewership in Korea. So Ji Sub and Gong Hyo Jin's incredible acting gives the show its distinct flavor. However, it's hard to pinpoint the genre of this drama.

Blurring the lines between genres has been the key to success for dramas and movies. "The Master's Sun" might seem like a romantic comedy at first glance because of the love line between Gong Hyo Jin and So Ji Sub, but every episode features a ghost story - and not a cutesy ghost story but horrifying, nightmarish ghost stories. Some fans of the drama complain that it's too scary to watch alone. That part of the story line can be aptly called "horror."

So the producers of the show have begun calling it a "romcom-horror". It's a combination of romantic comedy and horror.

The drama series that "The Master's Sun" followed was "I Can Hear Your Voice," which was a romance that incorporated law/justice court drama as well as sci-fi fantasy, in that the main character had special powers. It was a romantic-law-drama-fantasy.

Several current TV shows and upcoming TV shows are biting into this trend. "Good Doctor" is a coming-of-age drama mixed with a medical drama. "Who Are You?" is a sci-fi fantasy that is also a mystery, who-dun-it genre. "The Man from the Stars" is an upcoming drama that features Jeon Ji Hyun and Kim Soo Hyun and is a romantic comedy/sci-fi hybrid. Another upcoming drama, "Heavy Hangs the Head that Holds the Crown, Heirs" is a coming-of-age romantic comedy that is also a sci-fi fantasy.

It is truly the era of multi-genre dramas. One producer says, "The age of single genre drama is no more. The viewers demand more than a simple, singular plot line, and in order to create a story that feature many twists and turns with an unexpected ending, we need to mix different genres together. We can't expect the viewers to be okay with seeing the same basic plot line over and over again."

Of course, the most important thing is all the different genres incorporated support and mesh well together. However, with the obvious trend being mixed genre dramas, the consensus is that it is a brave new world for scenario writers who now have incredible freedom.
