Roman Polanksi Rape Charges May Get Him Arrested at Poland Film Fest; Risks Extradition to the United States for 35-Year-Old Crime

Roman Polanski’s rape charges from 1977 might get the director arrest at a Poland Film Festival.

Director Roman Polanski, who made the films “Rosemary’s Baby,” “The Ninth Gate,” and 2002's Oscar-winning "The Pianist," risked getting himself arrested by attending a film festival in Poland. If arrested in Poland, Roman Polanski would face extradition to the U.S. for an infamous rape case from over 35 years ago.

Roman Polanski fled the United States in 1977 after he plead guilty to having sex with a 13-year-old girl. Roman Polanski appeared at the Gdynia Film Festival in Poland, where he grew up, to deliver a masterclass for film school students. Roman Polanski also presented a screening of his film “Venus in Furs.” Roman Polanski arrived in Poland late Thursday. Roman Polanski is set to appear at both events today.

Roman Polanski is a French citizen currently living in France. Roman Polanski was arrested in 2009 when he traveled to Switzerland to attend the Zurich Film Festival. Polanski spent a long time under house-arrest at his chalet in Gstaad. When the U.S. authorities failed to extradite him, he was let go.

Roman Polanski was born in France but went to school in Poland. Polanski visited Poland for a friend’s funeral a few years ago.

In 1977, Roman Polanski, 80, pleaded guilty to having sex with Samantha Geimer, who was 13 years old at the time during a photoshoot. Court papers showed that Roman Polanski drugged the girl and gave her alcohol.

Roman Polanski told Vanity Fair that he felt more persecuted after his 2009 arrest in Switzerland at the request of the United States than he did when he was convicted of the crime.

He told Vanity Fair "I didn't have that at all then. This was much more like the assassination of Sharon and what happened afterwards."

Roman Polanski’s wife, actress Sharon Tate, and her friends, were killed by the Manson family gang in 1969.
