Natalie Portman Teases Details About Female Superhero Movie; Something’s In the Works at Marvel

Natalie Portman, “Black Swan” star, is playing in the superhero film "Thor: The Dark World” as the scientist Jane Foster and she’s put her knowledge to good use revealing that Marvel might have a new female superhero movie in the works.

Natalie Portman is the latest to acknowledge that female-driven superhero films have been woefully lacking. Joss Wheedon recently bemoaned the fact over the summer blockbuster period and even Stan Lee of Marvel Comics has been hinting about it. Natalie Portman explained that here have been no female superheroes in almost 10 years. But the superhero genre has been pulling the biggest box office numbers.

Sure, there have been some great woman characters in superhero films, like She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel and Black Widow, but no female superheroes have carried the movies.

In an exclusive interview with SciFiNow, Natalie Portman hinted that a female superhero might be on the horizon in Marvel's upcoming movies. There are rumors circulating that Marvel is developing a movies series on Hayley Atwell's Agent Peggy Carter.

“Thor: The Dark World” star Natalie Portman told SciFiNow "There are definitely many strong women, but it will be exciting when there is a central female character which I think is coming – I have heard is coming. And, of course, also a central non-white character will also be exciting. Title characters."

Natalie Portman says there have been strong female supporting characters in Marvel movies, "They do definitely have strong female characters in them, and I think it’s a testament to the people who run Marvel - their respect, their just normal human respect for women, the way they want to characterize them. You can tell when men talk to you, as just a person or as a 'woman.'"

Natalie Portman continued "There are definitely many strong women, but it will be exciting when there is a central female character which I think is coming—I have heard is coming—and, of course, also a central non-white character will also be exciting. Title characters."

"Thor: The Dark World" opens on November 8.
