Kelly Clarkson: Jane Austen Ring Going Back To Museum; Was Too Tight Anyway

Kelly Clarkson’s Jane Austen ring won’t be coming home with her. Maybe the American Idol winner should have said she couldn’t get it off her finger.

Kelly Clarkson couldn’t take home a ring that used to grace the finger of the writer Jane Austen. A British Museum pulled in enough money to buy Kelly Clarkson’s Jane Austen ring back.

The gold and turquoise Jane Austen ring was in Austen family for about 200 years before it was sold at auction last year. After Jane Austen died in 1817 from an unknown illness, the ring was passed to her sister Cassandra who then gave it to her sister-in-law Eleanor Austen when she got engaged to the Reverend Henry Thomas Austen.

Last year, Kelly Clarkson bought the Jane Austen ring at a Sotheby's auction last year. The British government found out and tried to bar the 31-year-old singer from taking it out of England. They needed enough time to raise funds to buy the Jane Austen ring from Kelly Clarkson and "save it for the nation". After Kelly Clarkson bought the Jane Austen ring for £150,000, the British government stopped her from taking it home by issuing a temporary export ban.

Kelly Clarkson’s prize now sits in Jane Austen's House Museum in Hampshire, in southern England. The museum is where the 19th century author Jane Austen wrote penned her six novels. Jane Austen's novels include "Pride and Prejudice" and "Emma." The museum announced that they bought the Jane Austen ring from Kelly Clarkson for $253,300.

Kelly Clarkson won the Jane Austen ring by outbidding the museum at the original auction earlier in the year. In August, The Jane Austen's House Museum launched a campaign to raise the money to buy the ring back and safely house it for Jane Austen fans around the world. Donations included a single pledge of £100,000 from an anonymous donor as well as TV gardener Alan Titchmarsh and Jane Austen fans worldwide.

The Jane Austen ring is one of only three surviving pieces of jewelry known to have belonged to the writer. Jane Austen's House Museum in Chawton, Hampshire, will put it on display early next year.

Jane Austen's House Museum Curator Mary Guyatt said "The museum has been stunned by the generosity and light-footedness of all those who have supported our campaign. Visitors come from all around the world to see the house where she once lived and we will now take great pleasure in displaying this pretty ring for their appreciation."

Kelly Clarkson said "The ring is a beautiful national treasure and I am happy to know that so many Jane Austen fans will get to see it at Jane Austen's House Museum.”
