Miss Philippines 2013 Winner Takes Miss World 2013 Crown in Indonesia Despite Threats From Islamic Defenders (Video)

Miss Philippines 2013 winner was crowned Miss World 2013 in Indonesia on Saturday.

In the middle of extremely tight security in Bali, Indonesia, Miss Philippines 2013 winner, Megan Young, took the Miss World crown yesterday. The final contest of the Miss World 2013 contest was moved the resort island after protests from Muslim hardliner groups.

After winning the 63rd annual event, the Miss Philippines 2013 winner, said "I promise to be the best Miss World ever." Throngs of Filipino fans who traveled to see the Miss World 2013 contest celebrated by jumping and waving the Philippine flag.

The Islamic Defenders Front had been threatening to disrupt the contest on Saturday, but police said no rallies were staged. The hardline Muslim group has been staging demonstrations for weeks. The Islamic Defenders from wanted the government to cancel the Miss World 2013 contest because members declared it indencent, that it showed too much skin and went against Islamic teachings.

There were 127 contestants vying for the title of Miss World 2013 on Saturday. The Miss World 2013 contestants were introduced wearing evening gowns, some of the gowns had plunging necklines and slits up the leg. One of the local organizers, Syafril Nasution, said four candidates dropped out before the final contest, mainly due to illnesses.

Miss Philippines 2013, Megan Young, was born in the United States and moved to the Philippines when she was 10. Miss Philippines 2013 appeared as a television host and in films. The new Miss World 2013 took the crown from the 2013 winner, Wenxia Yu of China.

The second place Miss World 2013 winner was Miss France, Marine Lorphelin, 20, and Miss Ghana, Carranzar Naa Okailey Shooter, 22, took third place.

The Miss World 2013 organizers agreed to Islamic demands and replaced bikinis with more conservative sarongs in the swimsuit competition. But more mainstream Islamic groups continued to put pressure on the pageant and called for the contest to be banned.

Three weeks ago, the Indonesian government announced that they would move the final conest from the outskirts of the capital, Jakarta, to the resort island of Bali, which is dominantly a Hindu region. Earlier Miss World 2013 rounds were held in Bali.

The British, Australian and U.S. embassies issued warnings to citizens who were planning trips to Bali during the Miss World 2013 competition. They were afraid there could be large-scale protests or even attacks.

The Director of Vital Security for Bali provincial police, Col. R. Umar Faroq, said the government deployed thousands of security forces to secure the final.
Faroq said "The success in securing the Miss World final will be a benchmark for the police in securing the incoming APEC Summit."

The Islamic Defenders Front forced Lady Gaga to cancel a sold-out show last year after branding Lady Gaga her a "devil worshipper."
