Anna Malova, Miss Russia 1998, Caught Writing Herself Prescriptions; Charges Dismissed

Anna Malova, who was Miss Russia in 1998, is free. She had been up on shoplifting and drugs charges. Anna Malova was caught writing herself prescriptions and shoplifting.

After New York court drug dropped shoplifting charges against her, former Miss Russia Anna Malova, told the court that she has learned from her mistakes. Anna Malova had been accused of stealing prescription pads from doctors and writing prescriptions for pain and anti-anxiety drugs for herself. Anna Malonva did it 14 times.

After Anna Malova finished two years in a drugs rehabilitation program, Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Richard Weinberg dismissed the charges as well as a shoplifting charge. Anna Malova was charged with shoplifting from a clothes shop,

Prosecutors wanted the former Miss Russia Anna Malova to spend three more months in treatment. The court decided that Anna Malova had met the requirements of her rehabilitation.

Judge Weinberg told Anna Malova,"You can be very proud of yourself in getting your life back," but warned "If you find yourself failing, you'll be back before me."

As she left the court, Anna Malova told reporters "I've learned my lesson. I look at the world with clear eyes."

After her arrest in June 2011, Anna Malova went into inpatient drug rehabilitation in June 2011. Initially, Ana Malova was supposed to be in treatment for a year. But after she caused trouble at the rehab center in 2011, she was jailed for a month. The former Miss Russia got into trouble again in March 2012, when prosecutors said she was hoarding pills while in treatment.

In arguing that she needed more time in treatment, prosecutors pointed out that she still takes an anti-anxiety drug and doesn't have a paid job, which is normally a requirement for completing a rehab program.

Robert Gottlieb, Anna Malova’s attorney, said doctors had prescribed the medication for her, and she is volunteering at a music company.

Anna Malova said the publicity surrounding the shoplifting and drug case made it hard t for her to find paid employment.

Anna Malova finished in the top 10 in the 1998 Miss Universe contest in 1998.
