Comedian Noh Hong Chul Looks Back At His Rebellious Youth: 'When I Was Young, People Didn't Have Faith In Me' Says 'Gangnam Style' Scene Stealer

Noh Hong Chul may be one of South Korea's top comedians, but growing up, not everyone around him was sold on his talent.

Best known to many K-pop fans from his scene dancing in the elevator with Psy in the "Gangnam Style" video, Noh opened up about the struggles of his youth at a recent fan club event, according to the website allkpop.

"When I was young, people didn't have faith in me," said the comedian. "At school, even in the army, they told me to bring my parents [in to talk about my behavior]."

Yet Noh, who says he has always made having fun his top priority, said he still enjoyed himself.

"When I look back, I was really happy," Noh said. "Because I thought that if I did something that I really wanted and loved [for my career] life would pay me back in kind."

The comedian also credited his friends' encouragement for enabling him to stick to his goal of becoming a professional entertainer.

"For me, who loved to talk, my friends would always say that I had a good personality," Noh said.

"I'm always happy since I'm working in what I love doing."

The star, who got his big break in 2004 when he became the host of the Mnet program "Dr. Noh's Pleasure Street," told the audience of adoring fans not to be afraid of forging their own path.

"Even if your values are different from everyone else, if you push forward to the end you'll come upon a place where work and play blends together," Noh said. "You should all live doing what is fun for you."

But what is fun to the comedian does not apparently include expanding his celebrity status into America.

According to the news publication Chosun Ilbo, Noh turned down several offers to appear on US television shows after his appearance performing his trademark "jeojil" or "lewd" pelvic thrust dance in the "Gangnam Style" video.

One reason for the comedian turning down one such request from last year was bad communication, a representative for the actor told NoCutNews.

"Due to the fame of 'Gangnam Style' we have received a casting request from overseas," the rep said.

"However, due to issues such as communication, we decided to respectfully turn down the offer."
