Los Angeles Airport Shooting Incident: The 23-year Old Gunman, Paul Anthony Ciancia Is Charged With Murder After Killing One TSA Agent – Terminal 3 Reopens!

A 23-year old man armed with assault rifle identified as Paul Anthony Ciancia, 23, is the suspect for the Los Angeles Airport shooting incident, which happened last Friday morning.

According to authorities, the gunman began shooting at approximately 9:20 a.m. on the lower level of Terminal 3, after pulling out an assault rifle from his bag; he then proceeded upstairs all the way through security checkpoint and into the gate area.

The shooter wounded six people and left one TSA officer dead from the incident. A representative for the TSA officers' union, the American Federation of Government Employees, confirmed the death of 39-year-old TSA agent Gerardo I. Hernandez, whose death was the first for a TSA agent in the line of duty.

"There were than 100 more rounds that could have...killed everybody in that terminal," Mayor Eric Garcetti said, commending the work of the officers of the Los Angeles Airport Police Division who responded at the scene.

The airport police responded and wounded the suspect, who received medical attention and was taken into custody near the food court of terminal 3.

The suspect is now being charged with two felony counts and murder that could carry the death penalty. According to the complaint filed, Mr. Ciancia pulled out a Smith & Wesson .223 caliber M & P -15 assault rifle and "fired multiple rounds at point-blank range" at Mr. Hernandez, who was stationed at a security checkpoint.

Mr. Ciancia then moved up an escalator toward the screening area but "looked back at the wounded officer...who appeared to move and returned to shoot the wounded officer again," the complaint stated.

The gunman "made a conscious decision to kill TSA officers," as told by David Bowditch, special agent in charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Los Angeles.

Moreover, according to the complaint, Mr. Ciancia has with him a signed, handwritten note stating that he wanted to kill TSA officers, adding that he wants to "instill fear into your traitorous minds."

The U.S. Attorney General will review the case and decide if the death penalty will be pursued.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Airport Terminal 3 has reopened, but only for ticket purchases and for workers to answer questions only, according from a tweet posted by the airport officials Saturday morning. No flights would depart from the terminal still.

Luggages that were left from the airport due to the shooting incident last Friday were allowed to be retrieved as well.
