Celebs Take To Twitter To Celebrate Guy Fawkes Day: Why A 17th Century Terrorist Still Gets Major Buzz

In today's political climate and with the news of Edward Snowden's whistleblowing about government intrusion, it is important to remember Guy Fawkes. The British Government used the Guy Fawkes Gunpowder Plot of 1605 as an excuse to spy on their own people.

The holiday is named for Guy Fawkes, a political rebel who got famous for planning the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. The plot was to blow up the House of Lords and assassinate King James. An anonymous letter-writer tipped off authorities. Guy Fawkes was labeled a Catholic terrorist and was arrested by British authorities on Nov. 5, 1605. The plot failed.

But it didn't fail as far as celebrity tweets, Alyssa Milano, Eric Whitacre, Jimmy Carr and other notables gave history lessons, cracked jokes and mourned the death of a man who tried to make a difference.
