Led Zeppelin IV Turns 25; Heavy Rock Band's Album Was More Than Just a `Stairway to Heaven' (Video)

Led Zeppelins' fourth album is their best known. It's the one with "Stairway to Heaven," which every guitarist has to learn if they want to call themselves guitarists, on it. Even Madonna learned "Stairway to Heaven." The album is also called ZoSo, The Hermit, The Four Symbols and Runes. Usually it's just called "the album with the guy carrying sticks" or "the album that 'Stairway to Heaven' is on." No matter what it's called, it is a classic. Officially. Led Zeppelin IV turned 25 today. That makes it too old for Jimmy Page.

Led Zeppelin IV also had "Rock and Roll," "Going to California," and "Black Dog," all killer FM hits that still dominate Classic Rock stations. When IV came out Led Zeppelin was already "The Biggest Band In The World." They'd busted their asses touring with band's like Jethro Tull, who were recording their Aqualung album in the studio down the hall, and releasing three stellar albums.

Led Zeppelin started out as the New Yardbirds. Jimmy Page, a session guitarist extaordinaire who'd played on such hits as Tom Jones' "It's Not Unusual" and The Who's "I Can't Explain," replaced replaced bassist Paul Samwell-Smith and then guitarist Jeff Beck who'd replaced Eric Clapton. When Keith Moon of  The Who heard the new Yardbirds,  he said they'd go down like a lead zeppelin. Besides Page, Led Zeppelin was inhabited by singer and former defender of longhairs  Robert Plant, drummer John Bonham and keyboard playing bassist John Paul Jones, who had played almost every instrument on The Rolling Stones' recording "Ruby Tuesday."

Led Zeppelin IV was finished at the Rolling Stones' mobile studio.

The full track list for Led Zeppelin IV is "Black Dog," "Rock and Roll," "The Battle of Evermore," "Stairway to Heaven," "Misty Mountain Hop," "Four Sticks," "Going to California" and  "When the Levee Breaks."
