Review:Big Bang's TOP Reclaims His Throne As King Of The K-Pop Rappers With 'DOOM DADA'

TOP's signature sound is often imitated, but there is nothing like the original.

Big Bang's TOP has made a solid return to K-Pop with DOOM DADA, a song which uses the raw nature of hip hop to create a musical sound scape for a futuristic, Doomsday world. The video for  TOP's first solo release, draws inspiration from the 1968 science fiction film Planet of the Apes, in which the humans live as substandard citizens in a society run by apes.

The use of black and white to create a world that is desolate of color is an avante garde technique. This causes viewers to focus primarily on TOP and his characteristic voice. The fact that TOP was recently named Fuse TV's Sexiest Musician of 2013 does not go on unnoticed in this video. The juxtaposition of a vintage clothing esthetic with a setting that is seemingly in the future, provides a suspension of disbelief. TOP has realized that one of his best assets, aside from his talent as a rapper and his beauty, is his acting talent. Is TOP the force which is going to bring about the salvation of this apocalyptic world or will he deliver it into destruction?  This video showcases his talent in a unique way as TOP standouts in a world that is devoid of color.

The use of electronic dance music, which seems to be the current standard at YG Entertainment makes this Choice 37 produced song deliver a powerful sound. The heavy bass in the musical production compliments the natural bass present in the incredibly deep voice possessed by TOP. The tone set by DOOM DADA is one in which listeners become drawn in prior to the point where TOP increases his rap flow to conclude the song. The fact that the song ends after his strongest flow is a cadence towards a virtual battle, in which TOP has proven that he is the victor.

DOOM DADA is available on iTunes.
