Tiger JK condemns racism

It all started when two of the guests dressed up black women on the show "Sae ba kwi". With black lips and faces, they came out singing and dancing awkwardly. A video clip of this was posted shortly on youtube causing a black woman to post another video in response to the show.

But the attitude towards this black woman's response was even more surprising. Many netizens replied "Why should we apologize when white people can get away with mocking Asians?" sending a message that such discriminatory attitude was only natural.

This was what got Tiger JK to open up about racism. In a column, he wrote that "we need to be educated properly to distinguish between right and wrong, and why some things are much more dangerous than they seem."

He evoked the dark past of the black people. They had always struggled to enjoy the most basic human rights. In the past, he said that "they were denied the right to go to the same restaurant, ride the same bus, or even just hang out at places that other people frequented." Instead of being asked to star in movies, movies were created to poke fun at them.

Then he brought up the mockery perverse in many entertainment programs. "Although I do realize that they are just trying to be funny, it is important to respect them and distinguish between what's right and wrong."

"With the globalization of K-Pop, it is especially important to be more respectful of other people's cultures. We need to teach our kids about equality and fairness."

Tiger JK, whose real name is Seo Jung gwon, is a member of Drunken Tiger. Often lauded as the father of hip-hop, he is married to Yoon Mirae, who is half Korean and half black.
