VIXX Releases A Clean Version Of 'Voodoo Doll' To Counteract The 19 Plus Release

Jellyfish Entertainment's VIXX released an alternate music video for the single VOODOO DOLL, in time for full album launch. The previous video for VOODOO DOLL was filled with fetishistic images of body mutilation, inflicted by the female antihero, which was intended to mirror the pain one could experience at the hands of a voodoo doll. The first video received a 19 plus rating and sparked controversy for its images which were more consistent with Korean horror film tropes than with K-Pop. In contrast, the clean video allows viewers to focus more on the choreography and music rather than the concept behind the song.

The choreography for the VOODOO DOLL single also had to be adjusted for music chart shows, with the symbolism of the voodoo doll's heart being pieced by a skull-embezzled cane, removed. The concept for the first video and choreography contained heavy Gothic elements, making them more like what is seen by artists such as Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, or within the Japanese Gothic genres. While the artistic integrity behind the original concept was solid, the consideration of the youth audience is what most likely created this additional video. As a male group, VIXX appeals to a broader audience than acts like the duo Trouble Maker, who are specifically marketed towards older audiences.

VIXX debuted with a very lighthearted concept with videos for Superhero and Rock Ur Body. Their most recent releases such as Hyde has led to the transition to the darkness of VOODOO DOLL. The previous release of VOODOO DOLL allowed the group to express an unusual range of creativity with elements of bio-horror and thought provoking scenes. While there is a difference in the mood and treatment of the newest release for VOODOO DOLL, the video is a well addition. It will be interesting to see how audiences react to the newest release of VOODOO DOLL which much more K-Pop than Marilyn Manson.
