Derrick Rose Surgery – Chicago Bulls Chooses ‘Long Term’ Solution - Former MVP Likely Out For The Season; Will The Bulls Tank?

Derrick Rose surgery was promptly scheduled. The timetable for recovery has not yet been determined. It is highly probable that the Bulls will use the 'out indefinitely' tag for the time being.

According to CBS Sports, there are three types of surgery for a meniscus tear: "Removing the meniscus would get him back on the court within a week, trimming it would get him back within a few months, reattaching it would cost him the entire season and a rehab period of up to six months."

The Chicago Tribune cites two sources close to the Bulls' management that said they are 'leaning' towards the reattachment procedure. They took Rose's return from the ACL injury into consideration. If they choose the reattachment procedure, this would officially end Rose's 2013-14 season.

Coach Tom Thibodeau is trying to lift his team's spirits. The players are obviously devastated. Still from the Tribune:  "We're the Chicago Bulls. We have one goal and that's to win. I believe we have the personnel in that locker room to get it done. We know we don't have to change our style of play. We're built on defense and rebounding."

This is not a new scenario for the Bulls. This will be the third season that their team will battle without their superstar point guard. They reached the second round without him last year. Can they still do it now?

Much of the offense at the point guard spot was carried by Nate Robinson. Nate is explosive but erratic, and is not a fundamentally sound point guard as he prefers to shoot first. However, he got the job done when they needed him. Now the Bulls regret treating him too shabbily in the summer.

Chicago was already missing the services of guard Jimmy Butler, and on their first game without Rose, they got walloped by the Clippers. The next few games will be pivotal for the team. Do they actually stand a chance with this lineup, or should they break up.

They could amnesty Boozer, trade Luol Deng for a future asset. They might even get a lottery pick (if they decide to tank). The Bulls also have the rights to Nikola Mirotic, who could come over next season. If they are not contenders, they might as well make moves to build a much better team for next year.

While most players including Rose's bitter rivals like Paul George have expressed sadness with Rose's injury, we can't help but speculate that Eastern Conference contenders also heaved a sigh of relief..the scariest rival is down.
