"[She] mixed and matched Japanese and Chinese culture as if it were a Pan-Asian buffet," written Kotaku's reporter Brian Ashcraft. "For example, Kimonos don't have exposed chests or slits at the sides, and they are hard to dance about in. The collar and the fit of the dress is more cheongsam than kimono. Yet, the print, the sleeves, the bow, and the hair accessories appear Japanese-influenced."

Some viewers noticed it as well:

"So Katy Perry is wearing a 'kimono' that has a Chinese frog collar. OK. #stare," tweeted by stopthatgirl7.

"Why is Katy Perry wearing a fake kimono (Japanese) with a Chinese collar and splits? #culturalappropriation #whiteprivilege," WilGafney added on Twitter.

A Psychiatrist from the Psychology Today article "Yes, Katy Perry's Performance Was Racist, Here's Why," Dr. Ravi Chandra was firm about his stand that Katy Perry's AMA performance was indeed racist.

"I've watched our cultures misappropriated and commodified time after time. Frankly, many of us feel used as props to glorify white artists," he wrote. "If you don't think Katy Perry was racist - let me ask you, what if she had performed in blackface?"
