Are K-Pop Stars Considered As Hollywood Stars in France?

"I should watch MBLAQ's video that is produced by Rain. SS501 is worth watching, they are all really handsome."

"I didn't get to finish watching the music video of TVXQ and SS501 onlarge screen Dolby Digital 5.1. I should send my boyfriend out. Enjoying the music video is something that I can do only with girl friends or by myself."

A study analyzing the consumption of K-Pop idol culture of female fans in France was released. Professor Hong Suk-kyung’s paper 'The Discussions and Study of the Woman fans of K-Pop idol culture in France' was recently published on Korean Society of Journalism & Communication Studies.

Professor Hong interviewed some members of fan on French website 'Dorama World' that was created for Korean drama back in 2005. Most of the members of the website are female between the ages of 25 to 45. They are divided into 2 groups, the 1st generation who was raised with Japanese comics and now fell into Korean drama, and 2nd generation fans that came to enjoy Korean drama through K-Pop idols that are starring in dramas.

These fans call the handsome boy idols as 'Bogosse.' The term combines two French words, adjective 'beau' which means handsome and 'gosse' which means kids. Fans replay the music video of their favorite stars, and capture scenes from the drama that they appear on. They enjoy communicating with fellow fans by posting comments on their postings.

According to the analysis of professor Hong, Bogosse is different type of visual enjoyment from the aforementioned in film theory. The subject of enjoyment in sight from film theory is men, describing about watching attractive actresses' body in movie theater or special space. On the other hand, the subject of Bogosse fans are women, where it can occurs even as a daydream in an open place.

Professor Hong pointed out that the image of Asian men protrayed by Hollywood is totally different from that of Bogosse. Hollywood portrays Asian men as having high ability of martial arts but unable to attract woman, however Bogosse portrays them who are just as attractive as Hollywood star with great sense of fashion, romantic image, excellence in dance and singing.

Professor Hong interpreted this phenomenon of differences as the desire to diversify culture with different aspects.
