Just when the K-pop scene was starting to feel predictable, San E has returned with a song that manages to be both edgy and sweet, funny and even a bit moving.

Even if Korean rap is a million miles from being your thing, even if you don't know the lyrics are telling the story of a final dinner with an ex, there is no denying San E's "Break Up Dinner," featuring Sanchez of the group Phantom, has a ton of heart.

The influences that San E and Sanchez are channeling are right on the mark.

The production has shades of Tribe Called Quest but also more recent offerings by the likes of D'Angelo or his frequent collaborator Raphael Saadiq.

The result is a beautifully orchestrated beat that is easy to take for granted as E's rhymes fly by in the MC's standard machine gun style.

When Sanchez drops the vocal hook in "Break Up Dinner," it's pure Michael Jackson.

Hey, if you're going to emulate you might as well pick the greatest pop singer of all time, and the Phantom vocalist delivers a nice vocal performance that doesn't seem to be a forced mimicry of the King of Pop, rather it is an homage that is the perfect compliment to San E's bad boy rhymes.

But beyond the satisfying throwback sound of "Break Up Dinner," which debuted at number one on this week's Billboard K-Pop Hot 100 chart, San E may owe quite a bit of the song's success to the director of the music video, Woody Answer Jr.

In the well-executed music video, San E manages to pull off both physical comedy as he jumps up after being hit by a car on the way to meet his ex girlfriend for one more dinner and a major dramatic reveal at the video's that implies his ex-girlfriend perhaps never showed up to meet him, or if she did, returned to her current boyfriend (played by Sanchez).

Bluntly put, "Break Up Dinner" goes as close to a romantic comedy as any music video could without becoming something too saccharine for guys to stand.

In this way as well, San E is innovating.
