Review: Actor Lee Jun Ki Delivers A Surprisingly Funky New Dance Single With 'Fever' From The 'My Dear' EP [AUDIO]

There's an old cliché in Hollywood; every actor wants to be a singer.

And although recent movie stars like Jamie Foxx and Zooey Deschanel have been able to maintain credible careers in music and acting, they are inarguably the exception to the rule.

Six thousand miles across the Pacific Ocean, there is another movie star who is a strong exception to that rule, Lee Jun Ki.

The star of television, stage and screen is a former national ambassador for Korean tourism. He is also a pop singer with an edge to his softly delivered vocals that makes him unstoppable.

Lee's new song "Fever" from the "My Dear" EP released this week, is the perfect blend of 1970s West Coast funk and 1980s British electro, with a strong shout-out to the smash collaboration between Duran Duran and producer Nile Rodgers of Chic, the 1986 dance classic "Notorious" (Rodgers was of course tearing up the pop charts more recently as guitarist and co-writer of Daft Punk's song of the summer of 2013 "Get Lucky.")

What does this have to do with "Fever?"

The guitar playing is a highlight of Lee Jun Ki's new song and the playing is pure Rodgers-guitar where the rhythm matters more than the chords, but with chords that are something you can't quite place and have never heard before in quite that way.

Along with a punchy bassline and restrained sequenced drumbeat, the music on "Fever" is the perfect mix for Lee to drip his tranquil vocals over the track.

Similar to Courtney Taylor-Taylor, frontman for the legendary 2000s indie rock band The Dandy Warhols, Lee is able to lay down a vocal sound that is full and rich while maintaining a dream-like quality.

It is unfortunate that this unique vocal style closer to Togeworl singer Lim Kim than any male vocalist in K-pop, isn't applied to more dance material on "My Dear." The four other songs are disppointingly more subdued.

But that doesn't take anything away from the power of "Fever." With this one powerful dance track, Lee Jun Ki has staked out his ground as an original vocalist with a musical vision that is exciting to watch.

Don't hold the fact he's an actor against him.
