Review: BEAST's Yong Jun Hyung Exhibits Diverse Musical Talent For 'Flower'

Cube Entertainment's Yong Jun Hyung, the main rapper of BEAST, showcases his vocal skills and songwriting ability on the EP Flower. Flower is the first solo EP release for Yong Jun Hyung who had previously displayed his solo vocal talent with the 2012 single Living Without You. Perhaps it is due to his songwriting ability, but Yong Jun Hyung has been successful in stepping outside of the box that many K-Pop rappers fall into. Like artists who are considered the visual of the group, the main responsibility of the rapper is often to spit a few rhymes while the vocalists deliver the featured vocals. Yong Jun Hyung has been able to escape the K-Pop pitfall of the rapper to become one of the most sought after artists for collaborations and for songwriting skills.

The EP opens with the track Nothing Is Forever which at a little over minute is more of an introduction to the rest of the album. The title track, Flower is the result of Yong Jun Hyung's musical collaboration with Kim Tae Joo. Flower is a jazzy track featuring saxophones, jazz guitars, keyboard effects. Flower shares the dark sexiness that is found in Trouble Maker's Now, which may be deliberate. The accompanying music video which was released on December 13th in addition to the album, maintains the dark undertone of the song and provides perspective into the conceptual direction that will be used in future stages of the song.

Cube Entertainment's G.NA appears on Anything, which allows Yong Jun Hyung to provide rap rhymes as well as vocals. G.NA sets the tone of the song, creating a blend that is pleasant to listen to. Slow is a deeply romantic track which utilizes the deep tones of Yong Jun Hyung's voice, while also providing him with an opportunity to vary his range. Flower ends with an updated piano version of the 2012 hit Caffeine with BEAST group mate Yang Yoseob featured on the track. The piano version of the song is paired down while helping to bolster the vocals of both Yang Yoseob and Yong Jun Hyung.

Prior to Flower, Yong Jun Hyung can be heard on Kim Jaejoong's WWW for the song Don't Walk Away. As an artist who has been featured on many other K-Pop albums, Yong Jun Hyung has been provided the opportunity to receive the spotlight with Flower. The EP hints at what audiences can expect in the future, as this will very likely be the beginning of more solo releases.
