Profile Of A K-Pop Fan: UCF Student Mahogany Poinsetta Explains Why EXO Is At The Top Of Her List [EXCLUSIVE]

NAME: Mahogany Poinsetta

AGE: 19

BORN: Detroit, Michigan

PRESENT HOME: Bradenton, Florida

FAN CREDENTIALS: Currently enrolled at the University of Central Florida (UCF), Poinsetta recently wrote her English final paper on K-pop's crossover into American pop culture, entitled "K-pop Hype: Entering a Public Forum." In it, she criticizes US audiences for being unwilling to try anything new. "The problem with so many people is that they judge things before even giving them a chance just because the music is not coming from American singers," Poinsetta wrote. "K-pop is a well-blended melody of music that embodies the elegance of hip-hop, pop and rap."

INTRODUCTION TO K-POP: "My best friend introduced me to it and now I think I am crazier then she is about K-pop," Poinsetta said. "I think I was about 13 when I started listening to it and I can't remember what song. Though I have a gut feeling it was by SHINee, because that was my best friend's favorite group."

FAVORITE GROUP: EXO

FAVORITE EXO SONG: "Growl"

WHY EXO IS TOPS ON HER LIST: "I love EXO!" Poinsetta said. "Their dancing is just out of this world. All 12 of them are very talented. I like how they [perform] both Korean and Chinese songs and they always have a great new dance for me to learn."

FAVORITE K-POP SOLO ARTIST: G-Dragon

WHY G-DRAGON: Though Big Bang fans might be quick to point out that the group's frontman isn't exactly a bone fide solo artist, G-Dragon deeply impressed Poinsetta with his double album "Coup d'Etat," released in September. "G-Dragon by far is definitely my favorite solo artist," she said. "He has a very unique style that makes him unforgettable. I am honestly in love with his album 'Coup d'Etat.' It's genius."

BAND TO WATCH: Poinsetta believes 13-member Stardom Entertainment boy band Topp Dogg is one group K-pop fans need to check out. The band has been called the Super Junior of Korean rap. "Keep your eyes open," she said. "Topp Dogg is definitely top material. "

WHAT AMERICANS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT K-POP: "Even though the music is in a different language you still can find a way to connect with it just by the melody and tone," Poinsetta said. "Music doesn't have to be in English for me to understand what message is being conveyed in the song.
