Katie Couric’s Talkshow Ends, But She Will Still Be Busy; Producing Obesity Documentary and Moving On to Yahoo News

Katie Couric's talkshow, "Katie," will end this season as Couric moves on to her new gig at Yahoo. After failing to connect with daytime audiences, Katie Couric's talkshow will not make it to a third season.

Couric has hosted the ABC-produced talk show "Katie" for two seasons. Couric is also a correspondent for ABC News. Katie Couric's contract expires next year. Before ABC News, Couric was an anchor on "The CBS Evening News" for five years.

Katie Couric and Disney-ABC Domestic TV agreed to bring the show to an end after the current season. New episodes of "Katie" will continue to be produced through mid-June and with reruns will air ABC affiliates through September.

In a statement, Disney-ABC and Katie Couric announced "While production will continue on 'Katie' through June 2014, we've mutually agreed that there will not be a third season of the show. We're very proud of everyone's contributions to making 'Katie' the No. 1 new syndicated talk show of 2012-2013, and we look forward to the rest of the season."

Couric announced in November that she would end her contract with ABC News and head over to Yahoo in January. Couric will be Yahoo's "global anchor." She will host a regular newsmaker interview program.

"Katie" has been going through a number of changes since it premiered. Producer Jeff Zucker left the talkshow a few months into the first season when he was named president of CNN.

Media reports said that Couric was having trouble adapting to a daytime format. Ratings were credible for "Katie" daytime syndication standards and were strong on ABC's affiliates but "Katie" was expensive to produce.

Yahoo is one of the most popular sites on the Web. ComScore says it pulled in over 197 million visitors in July. But television is a more lucrative talk show vehicle. Hosts can command enormous syndication fees and advertising revenue. No star has duplicated their success on a a Web program. Oprah Winfrey, Dr. Phil McGraw or Ellen DeGeneres have tried. But this could also validate Yahoo's power.

Katie Couric will also be executive producer along with Laurie David on a documentary on the obesity crisis called "Fed Up."
