Music Video Review: B&H's "All I Want For Christmas Is You"

After 3 teasers and hints about what their version of the Mariah Carey Christmas song classic was going to sounds like, the music video for YG's newest duo B&H was finally released on the 20th of December primarily through their official YouTube channel. Since December 20, the video has gained over 620,000 views and counting, although it wasn't initially received all that well as the frank commentators will let you know what's on their mind.

Song: 9/10

Just because it's a classic and I thought their version really didn't tarnish the already existing reputation it made for itself over the years. I had no idea of the talent that Lee Hi had so I was pleasantly surprised to find out that she could hold her own with 2NE1's Bom. Their voices were golden, there's really not much else to say. They had very similar tones, which I suppose says a lot about the types of female singers YG is partial to. And there isn't much to compain about, in my opinion, when it comes to the song. It's a good song, it was a good version, and the ladies nailed it, end of.

And I'm sure I'm the only one who was relieved to find out that this didn't turn out to be a dance song, regardless of having heard that it was going to be upbeat and far from the original.

Music Video: 8/10

Here's where it gets a little tricky.

If you consider the teasers that were released before the video, the general expectation is that the music video would be eerie, and would explain much more about why the teasers had that kind of vibe. Fast forward to the release of the actual video, and many thought that there was a lot to be desired.

I personally thought it was a smart take on a creepy Christmas. I wasn't expecting blood or anything too haunting, but I did want a video that was visually stunning (while keeping within the Christmas theme, of couse) and at the same time would make you squint and think. I find that the video fulfilled that for me in a way that wasn't heavy-handed and obvious.

For those of you who thought that it was plain and touch and go, I can see where the loss in translation happened. There were some expectations that this video didn't meet. But I did enjoy the ghost theme and the fact that it is deciphered differently depending on how you understand the video. For me, I saw it as a tale of two ghost girls who haunt an abandoned house, and who never really grew up since they did many childish things within the video like trying to creat their own snow or "cooking" with bubbles and left over cake and milk, so on and so forth. I thought it was an interesting take on a Christmas video, and different from the number of releases that were made this December.

Overall: 8.5/10

Impressive video, impressive song.
