Doctor Who Christmas Special 2013: Iconic Cameo To Appear During Matt Smith Regeneration

As the "Doctor Who" Christmas Special 2013 looms ever closer, a spoiler has surfaced regarding a cameo that will appear during the final moments of Matt Smith's tenure as the Doctor.

According to The Star, "a ghost from Christmas past and a big fan favorite visits The Doctor just as he is about to die and regenerate into a new-look Time Lord."

There are many rumors surrounding this regeneration moment, including the theory that Matt Smith is meant to be the final regeneration.

But we all know Peter Capaldi will appear as Matt Smith exits, so does this cameo have something to do with the mysterious event on the "Doctor Who" Christmsa Special 2013?

"Millions of viewers will be tuning in to the Christmas Day episode, called 'The Time Of The Doctor.' They will see the Time Lord (Matt Smith, 31) face a deadly battle with his old foes The Daleks, Cybermen and Weeping Angels," said the article by Peter Dyke and Helene Perkins.

"And it doesn’t end well. At the close of the show, The Doc will reveal his time is up and he is dying. However, in a spine-tingling moment just before he regenerates, the specter of a huge favorite from the past appears in the Tardis. Who says: 'Times change and so must I but I will always remember when The Doctor was me.' And the spook tells him: 'Good night.'"

"It's the end of an era. But we move on. We have just done a read-through of the first episode of Peter and he is amazing," said Steven Moffat.

The executive producer also teased the mystery surrounding the regeneration during the "Doctor Who" Christmas Special 2013.

"We'll find out that Matt Smith is actually the 13th Doctor. Although everyone knows that the Doctor can only regenerate 12 times," said "Doctor Who" executive producer Steven Moffat to Radio Times.

"The 12 regenerations limit is a central part of Doctor Who mythology - science fiction is all about rules, you can't just casually break them. So if the Doctor can never change again, what's Peter Capaldi doing in the Christmas Special?"

The "Doctor Who" Christmas Special 2013 will air December 25 at 8pm ET on BBC America.
