F1 Driver Michael Schumacher In Critical Condition Due To Skiing Incident; Find Out The Latest About The Racing Legend’s Condition

Formula One legend Michael Schumacher has been rushed to a hospital in France after being sustaining a head injury in accident while skiing, reports said.

On Sunday, CNN reported that the seven-time world racing champion who officially retired from the elite motorsport last year fell and hit his head on a rock while skiing at the Meribel Resort in the French Alps. According to resort director Christophe Gernignon-Lecomte, the 44-yeard old German was strolling and playing along with a few other visitors in an unmarked off-piste (on unmarked slopes) Georges Bauduis Piste and La Biche Piste. He hit his head on a rock and laid down there for minutes until rescuers arrived and air-lifted him into a nearby hospital. Schumacher was then transferred from the Hospital of Moutiers to the Grenoble Hospital that has a trauma center.

"We have to wait for a police report," said Gernignon-Lecomte when asked about the cause of the accident.

UK's Mirror reported that as of 2:46 AM, French time, Schumacher is still being evaluated.

The Mirror wrote, quoting Jean-Luc Trowel;

"What is possible is that there is a worsening after the first minutes. There are opportunities for aggravation if a haematoma or cerebral edema develops."

He said the priority was to see clinical doctors and subsequently be assessed by a scanner and MRI.

"It can accurately determine whether or not to do surgery," he said.

"The news is a long time coming because the establishment of a prognosis in the early hours is very difficult. Often, physicians and surgeons are quite reserved."

The F1 driver's fascination in skiing, according to British journalist Kevin Garside, has started way back after he began his career as an elite motorsports racer. Garside explained that the German driver is a good skier, fearless but careful.

"Schumacher wasn't a skier when he joined Ferrari (in 1996) but by the end he was excellent. Each year Ferrari used to have a media week in the Alps in Italy and they would always have a race -- and it was always Schumacher who won. He was a genuinely quick skier."
