Russia Suicide Bombing Puts Sochi Winter Olympics’ Safety In Peril; Attack Believed To Be Carried Out By Group Who Believes Olympics Is 'Satanic?'

The Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia is just two months away. However, there is a possibility that it might not happen after a suicide bombing gripped one of Russian cities.

With the latest bombing in Volgograd Train Station in southern Russia, several experts have expressed their worries over the safety of each country that will participate in the quadrennial sports event that will start on February 6, 2014.

The explosion took place inside a trail station, killing at least 15 people. The authorities expect the number of casualties to rise soon as several other wounded victims are in critical conditions. The explosives, according to bomb experts, were carried on a backpack and were set off at the main railroad station in Volgograd, a city about 550 miles (885 km) south of capital Moscow, at 12.45pm.

"Most likely, the victims could have been much higher if the so-called protective system had not stopped the suicide bomber from getting through the metal detectors into the waiting room where there were passengers," said Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for the Investigative Committee, who also called the bombing an act of terrorism.

Many people look at this bombing as a direct threat to the sports event due to the fact that one militant Russian group vowed to target Sochi and even called the Winter Olympics 'satanic.' That group is called the Caucasus Emirate which is lead by Chechen rebel fighter Doku Umarov.

"They plan to hold the Olympics on the bones of our ancestors, on the bones of many, many dead Muslims, buried on the territory of our land on the Black Sea," Umarov said in a video statement.

The Russian government is yet to identify of the attack is connected to the Caucasus Emirate.

This is the second time in three months that Sochi suffered such crisis. In October, the city was stunned by a suicide bombing carried out by a woman identified as Naida Asiyalova. The suicide bomber detonated a vest of explosives while riding a bus, killing herself and six other civilians.
