Michael Schumacher Accident Update: Doctors Fear He Will Be In Coma Forever, He Might Not Become The Person He Used To Be

Doctors handling the accident of Formula One racing legend Michael Schumacher are fearing the worst for the 45-year old German.

"If Schumacher survives, he will not be Schumacher," Dr. Richard Greenwood, an acute brain injury specialist from University College London Hospital, told UK Times.

"He will be [a regular Joe] Bloggs. His rehabilitation will only be effective if he comes to terms with being Bloggs - and fulfils what Bloggs can do."

German magazine Focus spoke with experts on Schumacher's condition and reported that Schumacher could be in a coma forever."

It was in December 29 when the 7-time F1 champion suffered the unfortunate incident in Meribel Resort within French Alps. According to reports, he was skiing alone when he suddenly stumbled and fell, with his head hitting a solid rock. Schumacher fell asleep and spectators who were skiing nearby called authorities who airlifted him to the nearest hospital.

According to neurosurgeon Andreas Zieger of the University Clinic for neurosurgery in Oldenburg, head injuries are among the most complicated type of injuries and putting a patient in coma does not assure of his survival.

'Brain injuries are among the most complicated injuries that can happen to the human body.

'Predictions about how long a person might be in a coma or potential complications are seldom reliable.'

Meanwhile, support and prayers for Schumacher continue to pour. Ex-F1 champ Damon Hill praised his former rival saying "Schumi's accident makes us realise how vulnerable we are and how precious life is."

"It's definitely a dark cloud hanging over Formula One at the moment because he is such a large part of the sport and a lot of people know him very well and have immense respect for him. He is the best of the best."

German football's Borussia Dortmund, which is Schumacher's most favorite club, is also set to pay tribute to the racing icon by hanging a huge banner in their upcoming game versus FC Cologne.
