Review: GOT7 Gets Gritty On 'Hello' From The 'Girls Girls Girls' Album [AUDIO]

Although the lion's share of attention for "Girls Girls Girls," the debut album by seven-piece South Korean hip-hop boy band GOT7, has been directed at the title track, fans are missing out on a vastly superior song by ignoring the EP opener, "Hello."

What does "Hello" have that "Girls Girls Girls" doesn't?

By shifting the focus from singing to rapping, the group shows that they have the edge to produce an urban sound way more sinister than anything you would expect from any act described as a "boy band."

Like Exo and B.A.P before them, GOT7 is taking K-pop to darker and darker places, and that is exactly what is so great about "Hello."

Save for the pop chorus and a couple unfortunate Auto-Tune moments, "Hello" is by far the edgiest song on "Girls Girls Girls."

P.S. Motley Crue called and they want their title back.

It is unfortunate that a group with this kind of potential to produce innovative dance music doesn't push the envelope even further.

Sure these are seven young men with model good looks, but setting all record label financial goals aside, this group has the ability make some groundbreaking dance music. But they're not going to get there if they keep allowing producers to gloss over any grit or guts that their songs have with Auto-Tune or other tricks from the digital toolbox.

This is the least true about "Hello," which is why it is the strongest track on the GOT7 album.

The bottom line: "Girls Girls Girls" is a strong debut from a group with a considerable amount of promise.

But if GOT7 wants to prove to the world that they're more than another record label creation, they need to be willing to fly without a safety net, whether that's Auto-Tune or just safe pop hooks.

Now, of course, they're not the only act to make that list.
