Chinese LGBT Groups Condemn ‘Adjustment’ Therapies to Change Sexual Orientation of Gays; Therapies Include Electroshock, Drugs, Pornography and Hypnosis

Gay rights groups are taking on the Chinese government for promoting sexual adjustment therapies to change the sexual orientation of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people. Chinese LGBT groups say these sexual adjustment therapies include electroshock treatments, drugs and hypnosis. The LGTB groups say such practices are profoundly harmful to people.

Chinese LGBT groups are bringing on the noise to condemn "sexuality adjustment" and "conversion therapies" that are meant to change sexual orientation of homosexuals. The LGBT groups are fighting gay reparative procedures. The LGBT groups say that the therapy includes electroshock treatment and forced indulgence in pornography, China is the most populous nation of the planet.

The groups point to media reports of electroshock therapies, which include connecting a wire to a person's genitals while a doctor administers electric shocks as the person watches pornograpy in hopes that it would eliminate undesired sexual attraction. The treatments also include hypnosis and drugs. The Beijing LGBT Center believes that such therapies are deeply affecting physical and mental health of homosexuals, causing harm to their self-respect.

The LGBT Center in Beijing, China, criticized the methods, saying they "deeply damage homosexuals' physical and mental health, and worse, infringe on their self-respect." A representative of the Haiming Psychological Consulting Centre in Beijing said "After each shock, the person will quickly interrupt their thought, and separate from their fantasies."

Exodus International, which used to be the world's largest ministry for people struggling with unwanted same-sex attraction, made headlines when it distanced itself from reparative therapy. At the time its president, Alan Chambers, told The Christian Post that he opposed some of the methods being used like showing gays heterosexual pornography. Chambers warned against promising a "cure" or a "permanent" reduction of same-sex attraction.

Five clinics in China were discovered to offer 'sexual adjustment' therapies. The news organization AFP said the facilities use medications, hypnosis and electric stuns. The included account of situations where individuals said they endured trauma.
