Mall In Columbia Shooting Incident Kills Three, Including Gunman; Motive Yet To Be Determined

Police are still clueless as to the motive behind the mall in Columbia shooting incident on Saturday which left three dead, including the gunman who turned the firearm-a Mossberg 12-gauge shotgun-on himself.

Authorities identified the suspect in the shooting incident as Darion Marcus Aguilar, 19, resident of College Park

At a news conference, as reported by Washington Post, Howard County Police Chief William J. McMahon told reporters that they are confident the slain shooter acted alone. As to his reasons, he replied: "We don't know a motive yet."

"There are still a lot of details we need to confirm," he said, adding that they need to establish whether the targets were picked at random or they all knew each other.

The police chief narrated that Darion Marcus Aguilar took a taxi and alighted about 10:15 a.m. at the mall. After an hour, shots were fired at the clothing store, Zumiez.

After the smoke cleared, Brianna Benlolo, 21, who police said also lived in College Park, and her colleague, Tyler Johnson, 25, were dead. Investigators said that eight shots rang out in the deadly mall in Columbia shooting incident but when police arrived, the gunman was already lying in a pool of blood from an apparent suicide.

Five individuals were brought for treatment following the mall in Columbia shooting incident, one for a shotgun wound on the foot, while the others were for injuries incurred in a stampede.

The mall in Columbia shooting incident shattered the peaceful community that residents have built for Columbia, said Phillip Nelson, president of the Columbia Association.

"There are 100,000 people here, but it still has that small-town atmosphere. We like to think of ourselves as the Sea of Tranquility between the two Beltways," he told thePost.

Nelson described the shopping mall as "the gathering point," considered as Columbia's downtown.
