Yang Hyun Suk Vs Park Jin Young Vs Yoo Hee Yeol

Let us be the ones to judge the judges of YG, JYP, and Antenna!

"K-Pop Star 3" judges' chemistry on the show is just as interesting as the birth of new musicians. SM Entertainment's BoA, who was on the show for seasons 1 and 2, has gone, and Antenna Music's Yoo Hee Yeol has been added for season 3. As this small sized company's representative, Yoo Hee Yeol is dubbed the 'indie musician professional.' Yoo Hee Yeol is breaking down all preconceptions that were set in place by the Big 3 in the last 2 seasons. Not only that, his interaction with the other 2 judges are making for an entertaining sight to see, and he's been blowing life back into audition shows.

It's almost more fun to see the judges on the show (for now). These judges in their 40s are increasing the entertainment factor of "K-Pop Star 3." Take, for example, their conversations with their mothers.

Park Jin Young: My mother called yesterday and said I shouldn't exaggerate when I judge, saying things like "The future of K-pop." (Laughter)

Yoo Hee Yeol: My mother called me yesterday, too. She said I was the best looking of the 3 judges. (All laugh)

Yang Hyun Suk: I called my mother yesterday to tell her to watch 'K-Pop Star.' You know what she said? She has no interest. (All members crack up)

YG Entertainment's Yang Hyun Suk holds the center of the audition in his hands. He's usually the one to voice the most difficult words and criticisms. His humility is also apparent even in his judging. He often starts with the words, "I don't know music very well," "Although I'm not good with instruments," and "Even though I don't compose songs myself." His humble attitude makes it easy for the viewers to see at his eye level.

As humble as his attitude is, Yang Hyun Suk doesn't shy away from giving straightforward criticism when it's warranted. More than what he sees in front of him, Yang Hyun Suk believes in his producer senses. He'll say things like, "My producer senses tell me that there's something more that you weren't able to show with this performance." There was an instance when Park Jin Young and Yoo Hee Yeol exclaimed, "That was perfect," but Yang Hyun Suk disagreed. He said, "There's no lead vocal." And then he surprised the viewers by casting the group he just criticized.

Yang Hyun Suk said, "The reason why I do music is because I especially love K-Pop. My goal is to make a distinctive singer that can't be seen in America or Japan. Yang Hyun Suk is a lead producer in K-pop. He was even selected as Billboard's "International Power Players" Top 100 last year.

Of the three judges, Park Jin Young takes the award for showing the most enthusiastic reactions on the show. This JYP Entertainment CEO often cheers out loud, sits back in his chair from awe, or buries his face into the table when participants showcase greater than expected talent. On the other hand, when contestants don't meet his expectations, he's one to give them relentless criticism. He's commented, "Your forced body movements seemed like a lie," "This song is supposed to be in 24, and it was really bothersome that you sang it in 16," and "Your voice is better suited for singing, not rapping. I think you overestimated your abilities in going with rap." Because of this, Park Jin Young was criticized for being merciless.

However, when participants heed his assessment and put in effort to fix those flaws, their next performance shows great development that surprises even the judges. When we consider this, we can see a tiny glimpse into the genius that is 'Producer JYP.'

Antenna Music is currently fighting among the great giants YG and JYP, much like David and Goliath. Yoo Hee Yeol has finally stepped up as main entertainment. He isn't at all intimidated by either Park Jin Young or Yang Hyun Suk, and pleasantly surprises the viewers with his witty comments.

The greatest impact Yoo Hee Yeol has on the show is through his warm empathy. For instance, Ryu Ji Soo, who was eliminated in the last season, showed up for auditions again this year. To her he said, "It can be poisonous to you if you're too desperate, so loosen up a little." Upon taking his advice, Ryu Ji Soo was able to advance into the next round.

While YG and JYP are more focused on idols and vocals, Yoo Hee Yeol has shown interest in underground artists, thereby expanding the boundaries on the show. He said, "The underground music industry is just as intense as idols."

During casting auditions, Yoo Hee Yeol also said, "There's something that's more important than skill, and that is one's energy. Even if someone might be lacking in skills, if they have the right energy, they will be remembered. That can even give them an edge for success. If you can't find that, then it won't be easy to succeed."

Maybe it's because Yoo Hee Yeol's not part of a major music company (yet), but he is able to speak or judge more freely. He'll often tease the new groom Park Jin Young, or playfully interact with contestants, and overall soften the atmosphere of the audition program.

The final competitions are not too far away. Who will be the next K-Pop Star? Although we'll have to wait and see, it definitely won't be a boring ride, especially with these 3 judges offering their humorous and witty comments.
